Howard, eoloreJ, in the jail yard at Goldsboro4 expiated the crime of murder upon the gallows. The brutal deed was perpetrated in Sampson county on the 24th day. of July, 1878, upon an old man by the name of Batel Autrey, and the cause which led to the commission of the deed was to secure possession of abou1 $300, which was known to be in Autry house. The case was finally removed from Sampson to Wayne county, where Howard was finally tried, convicted and sentenced. Daring Lis - confinement he i has protested his innocence of the murder, but the weight of the testimony at the trial was so strong against him that no credence was placed in his statements. It was expected by some that he would make a fall confession upon the scaffold, but in the course of an incoherent speech which lasted nearly three quarters of an hour, .he vehemently protested his inno cence of the crime, claiming that he was persecuted to bis death by , -some of t te white men of Simpson county because he was a man of iLfijence among the col ored people of his section! At the conclusion of the haraDgue the Rev. Alliscn, colore 1, his spiritual ad- i; 'li isor, made a brief prayer, the cap and fatal ccose were adjusted and the drop fell wh ch launched Alex. Howard into eternity. His ne k was broken by the fall, an J the pbjsicians pronounced him dead in tn minutts after. In twenty minutes he was cut down and taken away for burial. The execution was witnessed by about 2,000 persons, each race being nearly equally represented. The Golds boro Rifles, Capt. . W. Hi H. Cobb, per fermed guard duty for the occasion, and the best order waj observed throughout the day. i i .I The wagonette will leave the hotels toi morrow morning at 9 o'clock for Wrigbtsville Sound. You can buy No. 1 Cooking and Heats ing stoves at almost any price at Jacobi's Hardware uepou ' A Flattering Unction. It is a singular fact that there are eight letters in Garfield's surname and seven In Hancock's. This wonderful discovery seems to have been made by the Radicals hereabouts and they are taking great comfort to themselves from the fact that it is a sort of 8x7 concern and that the eights whipped out the sevens through means of the biggest steal on record, in the memorable electoral commission. Let us tell them something tkat we are sure but few of them, for a want of theo logical reading, will ever find oat for themselves, that seven is a sacred number, as will be found by careful pru sal of both the Old and New Testaments The Democrats are well content to pre fer the seven to the eight; the one is a synonym of honesty and integrity of pur pose and the other of downright fraud. Morever, the seven represented not only a majority of the electoral college but a popular majority of a quarter of a million votes. Let the Radicals put this in their pipes and smoke it. They stole the Pres idency .once but they will never do it again. If Hancock is elected (and he. will be) he will be inaugurated. This is one of the very Issues which entered into his nomination, and it is one of the very best guarantees that can be presented of an honestly elected President in the White House on and after next March 4th Everybody cancer suited, with a Pocket Knife, also Table Cutlery, at Jacobi's Hardware Deoot- Church Services.
